OCTOBER? MORE LIKE… SPOOKTOBER?
We’re halfway into “spooky month”, a time when people love to go back to nostalgic favorites. We’ve talked about a handful of “spooky” shows on the podcast, including Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Charmed, The Walking Dead, Supernatural, and Teen Wolf –– give those a listen if you need to get in the mood.
In honor of everyone buying decorations and bundling up in sweaters, we’ll share a couple of our favorite spooky season movies (we do, sometimes, watch movies!):
Kara: I was always a Halloweentown girl through and through (the first two, obviously). I loved Twitches as well, but I rewatched it about a year ago and it did not hold up as well as I remember. My other favorite is The Nightmare Before Christmas, which I do like to watch around Halloween and then again at Christmas.
Adina: I know Hocus Pocus is supposed to be “it” for my generation, but I saw that movie for the first time last week (I know, I know, how could I, etc.). My personal nostalgic Halloween movie is Casper Meets Wendy, starring a young Hilary Duff!
TV NEWS
The “Arrowverse” is 10 years old. The extended universe of DC comics shows that began with Arrow has been around for 10 years. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe dominated the film world at first, DC had the interconnected superhero TV show universe before the MCU branched into TV–this article looks back at how the DC TV universe has grown to include other hits like Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.
Fred Armisen and Christina Ricci’s characters have been revealed in Netflix’s Wednesday Addams show. They certainly look like they’ll bring some laughs to this spooky show… though we’ll have to wait a bit past Halloween to see it, as the show drops on November 23. Watch the trailer here.
Wolf Pack is set to premiere in January 2023 along with the Teen Wolf movie. They also released a teaser trailer, showing Sarah Michelle Gellar in action, along with an ensemble of younger actors. It remains very unclear if this show is set in the same universe as Teen Wolf or not, but we promise to keep you all updated once we figure it out one way or the other!
The new adult animation series Velma revealed their cast designs. The HBO Max series, which is executive produced by and stars Mindy Kaling as Velma, also features Constance Wu, Sam Richardson, and Glenn Howerton as the rest of the gang. But there are some significant changes to the familiar crew, like… no Scooby-Doo. The team decided to nix the dog to make it clear this is a show for adults, though it stirred up some controversy in the Scooby Universe fandom. (I did not realize how many people cared this deeply about Scooby-Doo until they turned up to be angry at this show.)

CLEARING OUT OUR QUEUE
Or, what we’re watching this week.
Kara: I have finally made it to season 4 of Dallas. No, I do not yet know who shot JR, since the first episode ended on a cliffhanger. That being said I can’t imagine waiting a whole summer to find out who shot that man just to not get the answer again and have to wait a few more weeks, but I do think it’s a genius way to get people talking about your show. They really kept the Dallas audience on their toes.
Adina: I binged the new Season 3 of Ramy, which went into even bolder territory than the last two, with great performances (Hiam Abbass as Ramy’s mother on a mushroom trip? Performance of the year.) Still keeping up with The Handmaid’s Tale, Reboot, Welcome to Flatch, and Atlanta. Last week’s episode of Atlanta (Season 4, episode 5) was one of my favorites of the season, and a great showcase for Zazie Beetz (who, our old professors would love for us to remind you, went to Skidmore College, same as Kara and me).
PODCAST NEWS
Last week we discussed Apple’s comedy DICKINSON with special guest Aiko Hilkinger! Listen now to our breakdown of this weird, sad, funny, beautiful, gay show, that was officially approved by the show’s creator. Aiko was an awesome guest, too, bringing a ton of enthusiasm (and research on Emily Dickinson’s star chart).
Next week, we’ll be covering another period piece, one that Kara mentions a lot in our discussion of Dickinson, so stay tuned for more historical drama and great costumes!
