PEOPLE AREN’T AS CHEERY AS THEY SEEM ON TV
Some drama came around the Sylvester Stallone-led drama Tulsa King this week, as a casting director quit after Stallone allegedly belittled background actors on the Atlanta set. Producers deny the allegations, but perhaps it’s less surprising that a mega-star would (allegedly) disparage the appearance of extras, and more surprising that a casting agent would actually leave a job in response.
Meanwhile, the couple from the first-ever finale wedding of The Golden Bachelor have gotten divorced just three months after tying the knot. Is TV love not real?! (Don’t worry, Bachelor franchise fans - this hasn’t stopped the plans for an upcoming edition of The Golden Bachelorette).
If you need some new shows to put those stories out of your mind, premieres this past week included Hapless, Franklin, Good Times and The Hijacking of Flight 601 on Netflix, as well as Fallout on Prime Video. This weekend will bring The Sympathizer on HBO.
TV NEWS
Kit Harrington confirmed that a Game of Thrones spinoff about Jon Snow is no longer in the works. Another spinoff titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is still planned for a late 2025 debut, and of course House of the Dragon is doing well, but many other rumored spinoffs remain in unclear status of development.
A reboot of the early-2000s classic Heroes has been announced. They sort of already tried before, with Heroes: Reborn, which was like, part-sequel, part-new story? This one is a true reboot called Heroes: Eclipsed, which makes you wonder if they really chose to announce this now just because we had one of those this week.
NBC has cast a drama pilot for Grosse Point Garden Society, which reportedly follows “four members of a suburban garden club … all from different walks of life, who get caught up in murder and mischief as they struggle to make their conventional lives bloom.” Melissa Fumero of Brooklyn Nine-Nine will star as one of those members, along with AnnaSophia Robb and Ben Rappoport. Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs (executive producers of Good Girls) are leading the production.
The trailer for the new season of Bridgerton is finally here! In season 3, we’ll be following Colin and Penelope’s love story, based on the fourth book in the series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton. From the looks of things it seems like viewers are in for a friends to lovers rom-com (Kara’s favorite thing). Part 1 of the seasondrops on Netflix on May 16th, with part 2 dropping June 13th.
Speaking of Bridgerton, Nicola Coughlan who plays Penelope writes a piece for Harper’s Bazaar discussing Bridgerton, another new series she’ll be in this year called Big Mood, and navigating fame while still being herself.
CLEARING OUT OUR QUEUE
Or, what we’re watching this week.
Kara: If I come back here next week and I’m on season 8 of One Tree Hill, please mind your business. But I’ve really been flying through season 7. I feel like it’s harder for a show to keep my attention in the later seasons, but the writers definitely still had some tricks up their sleeves after Dan’s failed heart transplant. Also didn’t expect this week’s episode of X-Men ‘97 to affect me the way it did, but it was so well done and so so sad as well. I’ve also watched a couple episodes of Happy Endings here and there.
Adina: I’ve continued watching some smattering of New Girl and American Dad! I also caught the Curb Your Enthusiasm finale, which I thought was great and a perfect answer to people who hated the Seinfeld finale (which doesn’t include me. Hot take? I thought it was a totally appropriate way to end the show. But granted, I was binge-watching Seinfeld in 2020, not hyped up for a live airing of the most popular comedy on TV at the time, so maybe my expectations were different).
