A NEW ERA?
Sony Pictures is reportedly teaming up with an investment firm, Apollo Global Management, for a potential bid to acquire Paramount. Talks have been brewing about Paramount merging with or getting bought out by other companies for about a year now, so it’s almost one of the best ongoing story arcs in TV at the moment. Currently, Paramount remains in exclusive talks with Skydance.
Meanwhile, Netflix continues to dominate the streaming space, no matter how many people grow frustrated with their policies: they reported major subscriber growth and revenue growth this quarter, although the company also mentioned they don’t plan to continue to release quarterly subscriber numbers in the future. Some say this signals the “end of an era in the streaming wars,” fitting with reports over the last year that the business is shifting away from membership growth at all costs and towards profitability.
Premieres this week included Under the Bridge on Hulu, Bros and Part 5 of The Upshaws on Netflix, Conan O’Brien Must Go on Max, Big Mood on Tubi, and The Spiderwick Chronicles on The Roku Channel. This weekend will also bring The Jinx - Part Two on HBO.
TV NEWS
Fallout has been renewed for a second season at Prime Video. Following in the footsteps of recent popular video game adaptations like The Last of Us, the post-nuclear-apocalypse-themed series has had an incredibly strong streaming debut, leading to this early renewal.
Steve Buscemi has been cast in the upcoming season of Netflix’s Wednesday. Reportedly, he’ll be playing the new principal of Wednesday’s school, Nevermore Academy. Production for Season 2 is expected to begin in late April.
Idris Elba talked about the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog miniseries, Knuckles. The Paramount+ project is set in between the second and (upcoming) third Sonic movies. Elba voices the iconic echidna himself. “It's actually, really a lot of fun because he's just so dry,” the actor said. “He doesn't get it. He's like a fish out of water.”
Vulture released a list of great shows that currently aren’t streaming and why. This day and age it seems like everything is at our fingertips with the click of a button. But there are many shows that simply aren’t on streaming at all and are sometimes even harder to find a physical copy of. It usually comes down to who owns the rights, and in even more specific cases, the music rights.
A trailer for Hacks Season 3 has been released. The Jean Smart/Hannah Einbinder comedy will air its premiere on Max on May 2.
CLEARING OUT OUR QUEUE
Or, what we’re watching this week.
Kara: Nearly finished with season 8 of One Tree Hill. I think that’s all I’ve watched this week, but I am about to start watching Heartbreak High because I’ve heard good things about it.
Adina: I’ve just been chugging through New Girl, just made it to season 5. I’m in deep now. I think I just have to finish. I’m happy for Coach but sad he’s gone! (Although part of me is relieved because that really was too many people living in one loft.) And I love a good wedding-prep season.
