IATSE PRESENTING A STRONG FRONT
As you may have heard occasionally mentioned in the midst of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year, there are, indeed, other unions in Hollywood that have upcoming contracts to renegotiate. IATSE, the union which represents many production workers, has announced plans to hold a strike authorization vote ahead of March negotiations. The union leadership is pre-emptively refusing to extend their current contract, so they’ll either reach an agreement by the deadline, or consider authorizing a strike. We’ll bring you more news on these negotiations as they develop, because IATSE workers are just as vital to film and TV as writers and actors, yet are often exploited far more. Additionally, an unfortunate reality after the double strike is that many IATSE workers have had their savings depleted; they deserve support from their fellow unions as well as from TV fans as they negotiate for the treatment and compensation they need.
Premieres this week included Season 3 of Abbott Elementary and Season 7 of The Conners on ABC, Season 2 of Halo on Paramount+, One Day on Netflix, and Season 2 of Tokyo Vice on Max. This weekend will also bring new seasons of… all of the NCISes and FBIs on CBS.
TV NEWS
Percy Jackson and the Olympians has been renewed for a second season at Disney+. While not surprising given how highly anticipated the show was based on the popularity of the book series, it’s still hardly a given that anything gets renewed these days, especially YA content.
Kevin Williamson, known for The Vampire Diaries and Dawson’s Creek, has announced several plans to develop new TV shows - including a TV show based on Hitchcock’s classic Rear Window, plus adaptations of David Fincher’s 1997 film The Game and Ruth Ware’s book The It Girl. The deal is with Universal television, so the shows - if greenlit - will likely be available on Peacock.
Marvel’s Echo cracked the top 10 for streaming ratings via Nielsen, just making it to #10 overall. Stalwart hits like Bluey and Young Sheldon remain, but other originals like Netflix’s Fool Me Once and The Brothers Sun are also racking up high numbers.
FX announced its shows debuting this spring, including a new season of American Horror Story and a new thriller drama starring Elisabeth Moss called The Veil.
CLEARING OUT OUR QUEUE
Or, what we’re watching this week.
Kara: I finally made it through season 4 of One Tree Hill! I’m on season 5 now and was very surprised there was a four year time jump. Still not sure how I feel about it, we’ll see after a few more episodes. I am also finally finishing up season 2 of Abbott Elementary so I’m fully caught up to watch the new episode next week.
Adina: I’ve been in the mood for easy viewing this week, so I’ve bounced back and forth between bits of New Girl and The Golden Girls (both Season 1). Shows about roommates who are friends are just the best. I also need to watch the premiere of Abbott Elementary Season 3 so I can watch the new episode next week with my own roommates hopefully :) (Even writing this newsletter, premieres always sneak up on me.)
