SUMMER SOLSTICE
Ah, June, that window in between the rush of shows trying to meet Emmy deadlines and the summer blockbusters… a somewhat relaxing time, when there aren’t multiple strikes going on.
IATSE negotiations with AMPTP are still in process, with more meetings scheduled for next week. Negotiations on the new Basic Standard Agreement are planned to wrap up on June 27. Hopefully, the union will get a good deal with improvements for their members without having to push for a strike.
Also, voting for this year’s Emmy nominations is open - those in the industry will cast their ballots until June 24, with the nominees announced on July 17. It should be an interesting year, getting back onto “normal schedule” after the delayed awards due to the strike (and even “normal” for the Emmys is quite a different window than other awards shows). Plus, major contenders like Succession and Ted Lasso have left the field, so stay tuned for some potentially interesting nominations.
Premieres this past week included Season 4 of My Life Is Murder on Acorn TV, Rising Impact, Season 2 of The Victims’ Game on Netflix. This weekend will also bring Season 3 of Kota Factory on Netflix and the Orphan Black spinoff Orphan Black: Echoes on AMC.
TV NEWS
Renée Elise Goldsberry spoke to Variety about her larger-than-life Girls5Eva character Wickie Roy. She called playing the delightfully spotlight-hungry singer “liberating,” explaining, “Especially as I get older, I feel like it is less appropriate to allow your ambition to grow. Sometimes [...] it feels most appropriate to settle into gratitude and say, ‘This was great, wasn’t it?’ And that is just not Wickie. She feels entitled, and I need her help to feel entitled.”
The final season of Superman & Lois has been given a release date. The superhero saga, one of the CW’s last scripted dramas, will premiere on October 17.
Speaking of final seasons, or halves of seasons, Yellowstone’s final batch of episodes will premiere on November 10, minus a major character. There’s no exact number of episodes confirmed for the latter part of Season 5, which had a way-longer-than-planned hiatus (which began in 2022!) due to difficulty getting star Kevin Costner and creator/showrunner Taylor Sheridan’s schedules aligned with everyone else. In fact, after some industry speculation about whether Costner was going to return for the final batch of episodes at all, the star confirmed that he is not - sorry to fans of his character, John Dutton.
Hosts of Good Mythical Morning and Hot Ones spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, discussing their work. The big joy for them is that their YouTube-based shows are now eligible for an Emmy award for outstanding talk show for the first time.
A new teaser for the Penguin show on Max has been released. The show follows the eponymous Batman villain (played by Colin Farell) and is coming out in September.
CLEARING OUT OUR QUEUE
Or, what we’re watching this week.
Kara: I’m catching up on some limited series, so this week I watched Mary and George. After finishing that I haven’t been much in the mood for anything scripted so I’m watching season 4 of Love is Blind for the first time.
Adina: I’ve started Season 4 of The Boys as it airs. So far, seems to be more of what the show does well. I’m also going back to working through Sex and the City and rewatching a bit of my old favorite Charmed.
