MANY CRAFTS, ONE FIGHT
It’s union season once again - IATSE, the Teamsters, and the Hollywood Basic Crafts union are beginning negotiations with the AMPTP for new contracts. The groups held a rally with their members (as well as support from members of other unions, like WGA and SAG-AFTRA) to stir solidarity. Notably, this year is the first time in many decades that this trio of unions will bargain together for health and pension benefits (though they will have separate negotiations for issues more specific to their members).
Premieres this past week included Season 3 of The Cleaning Lady and Season 2 of Animal Control on Fox, Season 2 of Extraordinary on Hulu, and The Gentlemen on Netflix.
And, of course, Sunday will bring the 96th Academy Awards on ABC.
TV NEWS
Lionsgate is developing an animated series based on the Twilight saga. It sounds as though the series will be a direct adaptation of the books, since redoing things exactly as they already exist is very hot right now.
The cast and crew of Girls5eva talked about the excitement of Season 3 coming to Netflix. The musical comedy is acclaimed, but has never attracted much viewership, partly due to debuting on Peacock, but they hope that with the move to Netflix for the new season (coming mid-March), more people will check it out. Star Sara Bareilles said that when she and the other main cast were asked if they’d come on board for a third season at a new platform, “all four of us girls were an immediate yes. Whatever we have to do to get the show up and running again, it was a no-brainer.”
Netflix is also trying to break into sports, with a live boxing match planned between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson. The fight is set for July 20 and will be available to view for all Netflix subscribers. Netflix has previously dabbled in tennis and golf events, and is also expanding into airing WWE events in 2025.
An op-ed in Teen Vogue discusses how the recent cancellation of Rap Sh!t leaves a hole in representing young Black women on screen. The rapidly changing TV landscape has come with many cancellations, with shows by Black creators in particular often being first for the chopping block. Many shows don’t get a chance to grow past their first or second season, and that is the case more often than not for shows centering Black people or other people of color.
CLEARING OUT OUR QUEUE
Or, what we’re watching this week.
Kara: I honestly have not watched very much this week, other than a few episodes of Derry Girls and Love is Blind. In an effort to finish some things I started ages ago, I’m getting back to the most recent season of You.
Adina: I’ve been keeping up with Curb Your Enthusiasm and watching New Girl, slowly. I’ve just finished Season 1, and while I love a good slow burn, and didn’t expect a 7 season sitcom to burn through its main couples too fast, it’s slightly killing me to see Schmidt & Cece keep messing it up and Nick & Jess pretend they don’t like each other!
