THE SEASON OF PLENTY (OF TV)
It’s almost Thanksgiving, which makes us think of many beloved TV shows. Both Friends and Gossip Girl are known for great Thanksgiving episodes (scroll to the end of this newsletter for some hot dish on all the Gossip Girl(s)!). But in addition to old favorites and comfort shows, fall is also ripe with new pickings to feast on. Here’s what came out this week:
New Shows, New Seasons!
Dead to Me Season 3 (complete final season) on Netflix
The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 2 premiere on HBO Max
1899 Series premiere on Netflix
Gangs of London Season 2 premiere on AMC
And that’s just the past two days! Needless to say, there’ll be plenty to catch up on over Thanksgiving.
TV NEWS
Natasha Rothwell has comedy series How To Die Alone ordered at Hulu. Deadline describes the show as an “eight-part, half-hour series follows Melissa (Rothwell), a fat, Black neurotic who’s never been in love. After a comical brush with death, she refuses to settle for anything less than the life she wants, catapulting her on a journey to becoming ‘100% that bitch’ in real life by any means necessary.” We love Rothwell as both a writer and actor from Insecure and White Lotus, so we can’t wait to see what she does with this show.
Judy Blume’s novel Forever will become a Netflix series, run by Mara Brock Akil. The 1975 novel is being reimagined by Akil to tell the story of two Black teenagers who explore the awkward emotions of being each other's firsts.
In less fun news: An Expose on Eric Weinberg, writer and producer on shows including Scrubs, who worked for a LONG time before being charged with 18 counts of rape and sexual assault. This report is a long, emotionally difficult read, but an important reminder that people like this exist in the business and are often allowed to stay for far too long before being held accountable. Notable TV writers/producers spoke up about what it was like working with Weinberg and the signs that should’ve gotten him expelled from the industry sooner. Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino spoke directly about working with him. Scrubs and Ted Lasso Showrunner Bill Lawrence commented only through a spokesperson and denied any knowledge or responsibility for this man lasting five years on Scrubs before getting fired. It’s important to hold these predators accountable, but also question the system (and many people) who let them go so long without consequences.
CLEARING OUT OUR QUEUE
Or, what we’re watching this week.
Kara: I’m still keeping up with The White Lotus and I have to say if I were Jennifer Coolidge’s assistant, I simply would not be complaining about the fact that I hated my job while I was on an all expenses paid trip to Italy. All she has to do is stay out of the way, and she’s out here crying? Just chill out and eat pasta, girl! Also the guy she’s been hanging out with gives me the ick in a concerning “maybe he’s an incel” way.
Adina: I’ve also been continuing Friday Night Lights, and enjoying Season 3 of Mythic Quest so far. Haven’t watched this week’s new drops since I was traveling, but needless to say I will be curled up with a hot drink this weekend feasting on fall TV.
PODCAST NEWS
We released a new episode breaking down the pilot of Gossip Girl… no, not the original (we covered that one last year)... but the 2021 sequel series on HBO Max. We had our friend and honored guest Mia Merrill joining us, so listen now!
P.S. Since Twitter is maybe-going-down-in-flames, it’s a better time than ever to subscribe to this newsletter, and share the link with a TV-loving friend, too.
